Most industrial facilities get their power in a 480/277 volt 3 phase 4 wire system, because 277 is the phase-to-neutral voltage for 480's phase-to-phase.

How do you wire a 277?

Wiring Color Codes for 480 & 277V:

  1. Brown = Hot 1 or Line 1.
  2. Orange = Hot 2 or Line 2.
  3. Yellow = Hot 3 or Line 3.
  4. White = Neutral Wire.
  5. Green or Green with Yellow stripes = Bare Conductor as Ground wire.

Is 277V always 3 phase?

One phase at a 277 volt connection since 277 is the voltage to ground or neutral. It is a single phase from a 480 volt 3-phase transformer, 480 being the phase to phase voltage from connecting any 2 phases. So if you have a 480 volt connection you will have 2 or 3 phases.

Is there a neutral on 277?

The "277 V" indicates there are 277 Volts between any phase and neutral (N). The phase-to-phase voltage is 1.732 times phase-to-neutral voltage (277 x 1.732 = 480).

Is 277 Wye or Delta?

Wye Line-to-Neutral VoltageWye or Delta Line-to-Line Voltage
277480
347600

Can you run 277v lights on 240v?

120-277v ballasts are fine on 230v European system with power derived from 400Y/230V units but they're not meant to be used across poles on 208Y/120 or 230V Delta, or anything that places more than a few volts between case and white wire.

Do 208V lights need a neutral?

Moderator. Matt B said: IN a single phase 208v application in most cases no neutral is needed, is there no return path.

Why is 277 volts used for lighting?

The greatest benefit to using 277 volt lighting is that you can put a lot more ballasts/fixtures on a circuit than 120 volt circuits. Voltage drop is less of a concern as well.

What is the voltage on 3 phase?

A common supply voltage is 120V/208V 3 phase Wye configuration. 120 volts is measured from each phase to neutral (neutral is center-tapped) and 208 volts is measured phase to phase.

What happens when you get shocked by 277V?

With a 277 volt shock, 27.7 mA of current can flow. While both are dangerous, the ability to let go is decreased at about 15 mA. Essentially, you just hang on to the wires until you fall off the ladder or the fusing/circuit breaker kicks off.

Does 3 phase need a neutral?

In single-phase, loads the neutral wire provides the return path for the current, and in balanced 3 phase loads, because they satisfy the above criteria, the currents enter and return through lines creating 0A of out of balance current. So, there is no need for a neutral wire.

Is 277V common?

208/120V. 480/277V (most common in the United States) 600/347V (most common in Canada) 400V (special applications)

What color is the neutral conductor in a 277 480V system?

It's a standard industry practice (not code) to use black, red and blue (white neutral), for three-phase on 120/208V systems. 277/480V systems use brown, orange and yellow (gray neutral) for three-phase.

Is 277 and 480 the same?

277 volts is the phase to neutral voltage of a 480 volt 3-phase electrical system.

How do you get a 3 phase neutral?

The only way to get a neutral point in a three-phase system is to use a star topology. The only (real) way to convert a delta into a star topology is to use a delta-to-star transformer (AKA Delta-Wye transformer). You often find them at the top of wooden poles.

How do you tell Delta from Wye?

The Delta configuration has the three phases connected like a triangle. Delta systems have four wires total: three hot wires and one ground wire. Wye systems utilize a star configuration, with all three hot wires connected at a single neutral point.

What is the difference between Y and Delta power?

In Delta configuration, the phase voltage is equal to the line voltage whereas in Y configuration, the phase voltage is the line voltage divided by root 3 (sqrt(3) = 1.732).

Does Wye have a neutral?

The WYE configuration has gained popularity in recent years because it carries a neutral wire that allows both line-to-neutral (single-phase) and line-to-line (2/3 phase) connections.

What is the difference between 120 and 277 volts?

And 277 is the same as 120. So most systems that you're gonna come across that are higher voltage.

Can you get 120V from 277V?

A step down transformer that takes in 277 Volts and puts out 120V. Perfect for converting PL (pin-based) fixtures to more efficient GU24 fixtures. Simply disconnect the PL Ballast and hook up the Step Down Transformer. The power comes in 277V and goes out 120V.
