Reras

Respiratory effort- related arousal (RERA) A series of respiratory cycles of increasing/ decreasing effort or flattening, recorded by nasal manometry and leading to an arousal that cannot be defined as apnea or hypopnea.

What does RERAs stand for?

Respiratory events related arousals (RERAs) are a possible reason for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), fatigue and mood disturbances, a complex also known by the upper airway resistance syndrome.

How many RERAs are normal?

The chart below lists AHI criteria but RERA should also be considered. None/Normal: Almost everyone experiences the occaisional apnea, so having less than 5 of these events per hour is considered normal and no treatment is recommended.

What causes arousal during sleep?

As it sounds, arousal is when a person becomes 'aroused' or more alert to some extent during the sleep cycle. It is a change in brain wave activity. It does not necessarily mean waking up, but could just mean a shift out of extremely deep sleep to lighter sleep, from which it is easier to be woken up from.

What are the 3 types of sleep apnea?

There are three forms of sleep apnea: central, obstructive, and complex. The most common of these is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Various studies have estimated that between 4% and 50% of the population have OSA.

Which is worse apnea or hypopnea?

Generally, apneas are considered worse than hypopneas. With apneas, your breathing is completely impaired for 10 seconds or longer. But with hypopneas, your breathing is only partially impaired. A complete loss of breathing is, unsurprisingly, more dangerous and stressful on your body than a partial loss of breathing.

What is a good RDI score?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine uses RDI to determine the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea according to the following range: 5–14.9 for mild, 15–29.9 for moderate, and 30+ for severe, similar to the one used in the AHI.

How severe is my sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is classified by severity: Severe obstructive sleep apnea means that your AHI is greater than 30 (more than 30 episodes per hour) Moderate obstructive sleep apnea means that your AHI is between 15 and 30. Mild obstructive sleep apnea means that your AHI is between 5 and 15.

Is Rei same as AHI?

When a home sleep study is done, the AHI is often expressed as the Respiratory Event Index (REI). The REI is the number of apneas or hypopneas recorded during the study per hour of device recording time.

What can stop sleep apnea?

Treatment

  1. Lose weight if you're overweight.
  2. Exercise regularly.
  3. Drink alcohol moderately, if at all. Don't drink in the hours before bedtime.
  4. Quit smoking.
  5. Use a nasal decongestant or allergy medications.
  6. Don't sleep on your back.
  7. Avoid taking sedative medications such as anti-anxiety drugs or sleeping pills.

Why do I have so many hypopneas?

Causes of Hypopnea They may be caused by conditions that narrow the airway or cause throat tissue to become more prominent, such as obesity or hypothyroidism. Obstructive hypopneas can also occur because a person's jaw shape or tonsil size causes a narrowed airway.

What is a mild case of sleep apnea?

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, sleep that's interrupted five to 15 times per hour is defined as mild sleep apnea. Fifteen to 30 so-called “events” are rated as moderate sleep apnea, and the presence of more than 30 events per night is classified as severe sleep apnea.

How many hypopneas per hour is normal?

An AHI less than 5 is considered normal, and some patients with severe sleep apnea may be told by their doctor that they can accept even higher numbers so long as they're feeling more rested each morning, experiencing fewer symptoms and their AHI is progressively decreasing.
